How Cats Choose Their Favourite Person in the House
If you live in a multi-person household, you’ve probably noticed that your cat seems to have a “favourite.” Regardless of how friendly the cat might appear to be, they usually have one person who has a special place in their heart. This might not be the case for every single cat, but lots of cat owners have noticed a pattern. Ever wonder why they do it, or how to become their favourite person? Let’s take a look.
The Hand That Feeds
Cats are clever creatures – they know who fills their bowl and freshens their water. While feeding alone doesn’t guarantee favouritism, it often plays a major role. Cats quickly learn to associate positive experiences (like tasty meals and treats) with the person who provides them.
Respecting Their Boundaries
Cats are not fans of being forced into attention or any other situation, come to think of it. Cats often gravitate towards the people who respect their boundaries the most. Have you ever visited a house with a cat, and the one person who is allergic to cats ends up with a cat on their lap? This is because the cat feels as if they can safely interact with them, as they have given them plenty of space. The person who waits for the cat to approach, rather than chasing them down for cuddles, often wins favour.
Voice, Energy, and Temperament
People love to talk about the temperament of animals, but humans have their own, and animals pick up on them immediately. Cats are highly sensitive to sound and energy levels and adjust their behaviour accordingly. They may gravitate toward a calm, soft-spoken individual and avoid someone louder or more unpredictable in their movements.
Quality Time Matters
Cats love routine and consistency, and if you develop a routine with them, you will quickly find yourself as their favourite person. Whether through gentle play, brushing, or simply sitting nearby, your cat will appreciate the interaction. Cats value quality time just as much as humans, maybe even more!
Past Experiences and Associations
Sometimes a cat’s preference is shaped by past experiences. If one person reminds the cat (through scent, behaviour, or tone) of a previous trusted human, that connection may carry over. By that same token, cats who are reminded of a person who stressed them out or caused them trauma, it might be harder to build a close bond with them. That isn’t to say it’s impossible – it just might take time.
